Halloween is for kids? Yeah, right!

Last year we attended what, up to that point, was the best Halloween party ever. Last night's party topped it. My hubby, who's never been one for dressing up (at least not since he got out of high school ;) started planning his costume months ago. In fact, our costumes were closely guarded secrets - unknown to anyone except Cody.

Cody's costume was fairly easy, and no real surprise. He wanted to be a sniper, and had already scoped out a Gillie suit at the local Army surplus store.

See that wonderfully real looking sniper rifle he's holding? The one that he's not allowed to take outside for fear that the neighbors call the police?? He and Mike actually made that out of a block of 2x6 wood, PVC pipe, a Nerf scope and spray paint. They ended up getting pretty fancy with the paint, and collected leaves from the yard and painted the gun brown and green with a leaf pattern.

(The next two costumes will be especially appreciated be Teresa and Lori ;)

Mike decided to be Jayne Cobb for Halloween. Most of the costume was easy, since a lot of it was stuff we already had. I hopped on Cafepress and he chose a "Blue Sun" shirt, and then the search began for the hat. Because, let's face it: The hat makes the man! I found some patterns online, which would be great - if I could read patterns. But I can't. I've crocheted since grade school, but have never been able to properly read patterns (and Lord knows I've tried!) I found 2 websites that sold the hats already made. The first had at least a 6 week wait (though they couldn't guarantee it wouldn't take longer). Next stop: Ma Cobb's Hat Shoppe. OK, I can't say enough nice things about the girl who runs this site and makes the hats. She was quick to answer my questions, and as nice as could be (of course, she's a Browncoat, so no real surprise there!) Best of all, that hat was in our hands and on our heads ('cause we all took turns wearing it that first night. Until hubby selfishly squirreled it away!) in about 10 days.

Mighty cunning, dontcha think?

OK, Firefly fans - can you guess who I am??

Does the red hair give it away? How about the very large breasts? (side note: there's half a roll of TP stuffed in there!) Still stumped? I'm wearing 4 nametags: "Hello, my name is Saffron", "Hello, my name is Yolanda", "Hello, my name is Bridget", "Hello, my name Yo-Saf-Bridge". That's right, it's everyone's (except the crew's) favorite con-artist and serial bride!

Aren't we cute together?

Hey, don't laugh! Cody won the "Best in Show" trophy and Mike and I won "Most Original". Of course, it helped that half of the people there were fans ;)

Here are the hosts - Jana and James. Or last night: a ghostbuster and the ghost he fell in love with and couldn't bear to put in the containment unit. Of course, we had to tease about him being Ray, and her being the ghost who floats above him in the dream scene. Don't remember it? Guess you'll have to watch it again!

One of the highlights of their annual Halloween party is the "Haunted Garage". Every year they turn their unassuming 2 car garage into a fright-fest. It took James and Mike about 6 hours to frame up the passageways this year (you'd be surprised how many twists and turns you can get into a garage!) They spend the next several weeks stapling up black plastic, placing all of the ghouls and getting everything ready. And we're not just talking scary things hanging up. Oh, no. They have holograms, things that pop up or out at you, things that grab you, chairs that rock by themselves, and all the while there's strobe lights, black lights, and creepy music and noises piped in to assault your senses. In other words, it's cool!

Does the Arcade Count as a Field Trip??

Ever have one of those perfect days? You know - your hair falls just right, you hit all green lights, you find some cash in your coat pocket. All of the planets seem perfectly aligned. That's the kind of day we had the other day.

We and several of our homeschool friends went to a local nickle arcade. Even us moms got into the fun! I spent most of my time playing pinball, and then wandered around snapping pix of everyone having a good time.

Here's Jana playing ski ball. I love this game, but boy did I suck that day! I had not one, not two, but THREE balls go up into the thing, bounce around, and then come BACK down the lane to me. You can imagine what I'm like in a bowling alley. Which is why I don't bowl ;)

Here's Jarren, preparing for his future years at Sturgis. snort.

Cody and Kyle intensely battling it out with other drivers/pilots.

The furrowed brow. The look of intense concentration. Cody's once again saving the universe from the Evil Empire ;)

Jaci was content with collecting a king's ransom worth of prize tickets.

Apparently, Jaci isn't the only one who likes tickets, as Kala racked up her fair share, too.

We had so much fun there, that there was even talk of visiting the other nickle arcades in the area, just so we'll be able to properly rate and compare them :)

The Olympians come to Portland (no, not the gold medal kind)

A few weeks back we found out that Cody's favorite author, Rick Riordan, was coming to give a lecture as part of the county library's "Teen Author" series. For those not in the know (where have you been??), he's the author of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series. Check out his website for more info on the series. He originally made up the story over 3 nights in order to entertain his son. Cody connected with the main character because 1) he loves, loves, loves anything to do with Greek mythology, and 2) the main character, Percy, is dyslexic, just like Cody.

It was a good thing we showed up an hour early, because the line was already down the block. They finally opened the doors, and we were fortunate to get 3rd row seats. Cody spent the time reading the flyer they gave us when we entered, and re-reading some of the first book in the series (which he'd brought to be autographed).

He was a very entertaining speaker! We laughed for most of the lecture. He also gave us some info on upcoming events. On May 5 of next year, the 5th and final book in the series, "The Last Olympian", will be released. And they're finally working on a movie script for the first in the series, "The Lightening Thief". The script is being worked on, and directed by Christopher Columbus, who directed the first 2 Harry Potter movies. It's slated to be released the summer of 2010.

OK, I know the exposure on the photo leaves a lot to be desired, but - see that line? That was what still lay before us after 45 minutes of waiting. It would take us another 45 minutes to get to the front of the line.

All that waiting was worth it! Cody got his autograph and told Mr. Riordan how much he liked the fact that the main character was dyslexic, just like he is.

Another photo for the wall!

The Iliad - or, "what the hell was I thinking??"

Hector and Achilles Pictures, Images and Photos

Cody took a fall workshop on Greek Wars through the Lukeion Project. For those not familiar with it, they offer online classes and workshops on ancient Greek and Roman topics. This husband and wife team (who homeschooled their own kids) spent 10 years on archaeological digs in the Mediterranean, including at Troy (as in: "Helen of..").

Cody finished the first workshop and wanted more. After perusing the next batch of offerings, he picked two, including one on the Iliad. Now, this is a story he's very familiar with, and one of his favorite books is "Black Ships Before Troy" - a retelling of the Iliad. After checking what time it started (7:15 am our time) and him assuring me that he would willingly get up at that time once a week for the next month, I signed him up.

Without bothering to find out exactly what taking this workshop entailed. Silly me.

You see, one of the requirements is that you have to read 6 chapters of the real Iliad before each class. And I had signed him up 4 days before the first class started. Which means we had A LOT of reading to do. Actually, this meant I had a lot of reading to do, as he's dyslexic, and though his comprehension is sky high, his reading skills are not quite at Iliad level.

At first I wasn't too worried. 6 chapters sounds like nothing. Turns out, it's something. This is not light reading. With names like Ephialtes, Eeriboea, Eurypylus, Ereuthalion - there's much stopping and sounding out being done. Also - these are not short chapters. I've taken to sucking throat lozenges while I read, as my voice starts cracking about halfway through.

I can't even cheat by having him watch "Troy".

Oh sure, it has the requisite eye candy, but it doesn't accurately follow the story. Besides, that would be cheating.

They're having a workshop on "The Odyssey" next. I hope my voice can hold out...

I've Been Tagged! And So Have You...

Lori, my "Shaun of the Dead" loving friend (see? I didn't tell anybody at your church! I just told everyone else ;) has tagged me for a randomness/weirdness meme. This should be fairly easy to do, as my life is buffet of random and weird things.

So here's 7 random facts about me that you probably could have lived without knowing, but now you know anyway!

1. Like Lori, I also pick things up with my toes. Hubby calls me "monkey toes". I think it weirded him out a bit when we first got together, but as with most of my idiosyncrasies, he now finds it charming.

2. There's a rumor going around (started by my hubby) that supposedly when it's really cold out, I take on the properties of Velcro when I'm sleeping and he can't peel me off him. But he tries. Apparently there's quite a bit of poking, prodding, pushing and shoving involved. Not that any of it works. Evidently, I am quite strong when I'm snoozing.

3. I dance around the kitchen while I cook. Hubby typically isn't home yet, so I turn up the radio and sing and dance while I'm shredding, chopping, and sauteing.

4. When I find a sci-fi show that I like, I tend to get a little obsessive. Case in point: I watched all 10 seasons of Stargate SG-1 over the summer. In case you're wondering (which I'm sure you're not, but I'm telling you anyway. 'Cause it's my blog ;) that's 214 episodes, at approx. 45 minutes each, for a total of 9,630 minutes (or 160.5 hours). Yes, I actually figured it out on the calculator for this meme. Did I mention I'm a bit of a geek??

I love this scene, and the term "Napoleonic Power-Monger" has become an oft repeated line in our household ;D

5. I usually have some kind of treat squirreled away where my Hoover, uh, I mean kid can't find it and suck it down. So on those days when I'm at my wits end, I can savor a piece of dark chocolate and nobody has to die! Because that would just make a mess that *I'd* get stuck cleaning up.

6. Hubby and I can't be in the same room with an air hockey table without challenging each other to a duel. Seriously, the last time we played we mugged our own kid for some quarters so that we could play. I'm telling you, as soon as the kid moves out we're putting a table in his room!

7. I've had the same ornament hanging from the rear view mirror of my car since I graduated high school. It's a brass eagle's talon holding a clear, round quartz crystal. I got it at this little jewelry shop in Ashland, Oregon when I was a sophomore. The owner's traveled all over the world collecting unique pieces of jewelry and it was my favorite shop to go into.

OK, I'm supposed to tag 7 people now. Instead, I'm just going to say: "If you read this meme, consider yourself tagged!"

New Homeschool Show on TLC

This came through one of my Yahoo loops and I wanted to get the word out. I would absolutely *LOVE* to do this for a year! (The travel around the country part. NOT the being filmed part ;)

----

Hello

My name is Kati Loud. We are the LOUD family. This stands for Living Our Ultimate Dream. My family and I have always homeschooled our children. We have taken the plunged to do what a lot of homeschoolers have always wanted to do.

We have given everything we own away, bought a fifth wheel and set off to travel the USA. We have been on the road for one year now, and it has been an amazing adventure. About six months ago a production company for Discovery and TLC found our family's website. They have been filming us for awhile to see how we homeschool , live and travel in our new small home.

We have learned so much about ourselves and our family. We have learned that it is not the things that we have that are important to us, but rather it is each other that is important.

We love our new style of homeschooling. It is amazing to go to Jamestown and not just learn about what happened there. It is about feeling how they must have felt, seeing how it would have been to be there. It is amazing how much more a child loves learning when they can see, touch, feel , and experience a place or a person. It is life changing not just learning.

We are hoping to share our story with many homeschoolers. Would you mind sending out an email to your group about our show? We would love to let others see this style of homeschooling and to also let those who may not agree with it to see that it can and does work for families.

At this time they are still working on a title for the show. The show airs on Mondays starting on October 20. We think the time is 8:30. They think it is on right befor John and Kate plus Eight. It will be on TLC. The first four shows that we have taped will be on each Monday for 4 weeks in a row.

We have a website that will have the exact time once we get it. Our site is www.ourloudfamily.com

We also are in the process of a new site being built so it is a little
behind. If you or your members would like to sign up on the new site for email information you can go to
www.ourloudfamily.net/coummunity Then we can email once the time is exact.

The website is a fun place to check out our adventures so far. it is a few months behind, since the new site is being built.

We would love to have others get to see the show. The first 4 episodes are of getting to know who we are, how it is to live in a small place, why and how we homeschool, and some of our adventures so far.

We have 4 kids. Two girls 15 and 13 and two boys 10 and 8. It has been great fun for all of us.

PLease help us spread the word to all the homeschoolers and their family that you know.

Thanks for your time

Kati

Woo Hoo! I Won!!

Anyone who's spent any time at all over at Teresa's site knows that this woman loves soap! And I'm not talking Dove, Irish Spring, or Oil of Olay (or, as my son calls it: Oil of Old Lady ;) Nope, she likes the good ones!

Anyway, a week or so ago Teresa had mentioned that there was a great new giveaway over at http://gassnercustomsoaps.blogspot.com/ . So I popped on over to the blog and entered. Guess what? I WON! I actually squealed like a little girl when I found out. Yes, I'm a dork ;D

The woman who makes the soaps (hi Elizabeth!) was very nice. Check out her website: www.gassnercustomsoaps.com All of her soaps are handmade, and she has a TON of luscious scents! I chose Applejack Peel and Pikaki flowers (Hawaiian Jasmine). I can't wait to get them!
