Eating Around the World - Spain (in theory)

This months Eating Around the World took us to Spain. Or at least it was supposed to. Apparently here in the Pacific Northwest, Spain and Mexico are used interchangeably. No - really. If you type in Portland Authentic Spanish Restaurants, you'll get a listing of Mexican restaurants. If you can actually find something that says it's Spanish, the menu proves to be the same old bean burritos and enchiladas.

We arrived at the first place that we'd found on-line and quickly decided to leave. OK, I was the one who made the executive decision - but I stand by my choice! As hubby so succinctly put it - it was an indoor roach coach. For those of you not familiar with that term, it is the, um, endearing term used for those mobile food establishments that are frequently found near construction sites.

After eating our lunch, the always prepared Jana quizzed us with the differences and similarities between the two cuisines, how the different climates affected the cooking styles, the different foods that were imported from one country to the other, etc.

One of my posts just wouldn't be complete without a Sasquatch sighting. That's what he gets for coming with us ;D

And look! We have a female Sasquatch in the group as well!

We still have to choose next months country. Any suggestions?

Greek is always fun! If you go at night, they might even have dancing!!!!!

My oldest is a die hard scientist and will not think twice about experimenting on himself! LOL We still laugh when we think about him running with the hammer on his tongue!!!! ROFLMBO Yetsterday, he ran into my friend Jenn at my brother-in-law's house, while getting ready for their camping trip. She casually asked him, "How's your tongue?" He gave her a shocked look and asked how she knew! She told him, "I have my ways!" LOL

Stupid is as stupid does!

Tell "Sasquatch" you want to go to Florida!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ooo, Kim, I was gonna say Greek...hmmm, ok you could always try a bit of Bubble 'n' Squeak followed by Spotted Dick...traditional British fare, promise...or there's always Haggis or Black pudding....the contents of which best left undiscovered until after consumption (veggies avoid at all costs, all i'm saying)...those two usually found in Scotland and followed by deep fied Mars bar....because only the Scots would add a layer of 'heart disease' to an already high fat snack.

If you're still short of ideas perhaps the following inspires ya http://www.hostelbloggers.com/travel-lowdown/2008/11/the-weird-and-wonderful-world-of-food/ ....Starfish on a stick anyone?

Indian! Because not only is it tasty, but they're vegetarian friendly. :)

Thai food is my new favorite, so I have to second that one. :-) Pad Thai, Mmmmmmm. And you can get it vegetarian style. It's the only way I'll eat tofu, lol.

If I didn't have so many darn kids I'd be starting my own little Around the World Lunch Club! ;-) It sounds like so much fun.

Today I have a lunch date with my husband. I think he's getting talked into Thai now.

What have you already done? I know you did France...but I can't remember what else.

We are studying India right now...and can you believe I have never had Indian food. I must admit that it scares me...

If I was your Facebook friend, you would see that my status says; Lori is sitting in B&N with JOSS WHEDON reading upstairs!!!
My husband spoke to him, I was a giant chicken! You better believe I will be blogging about this when not on my iPod in the mall,LOL!
Had to share with someone who would appreciate!

Oh, I *love* Thai food, but rarely get to eat it because hubby's not a fan. And Greek - yummy! You should see my guys at the Greek festival. Every shot is of them shoving something else in their mouths!

Kim, Florida is actually on our list of places to go. There's apparently a beach that has so many sharks teeth that wash ashore you're pretty much guaranteed to find some. Cody would rather do that than go to Disneyworld. At least it's cheaper ;)

Emma,
Someone actually suggested Scottish food for our next stop, but I'm not sure there's a restaurant around. And Cody would be thrilled to try some traditional British fare! That website is wonderful. We've actually seen some of those things on the TV show Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern. It's definitely NOT to be viewed anywhere near mealtime!

Teresa, other than some curry dishes, I've never really had Indian fare. I would love to try it, though. Isn't it really spicy?

Kat,
So far we've been to France, Germany, and (kinda) Spain. It's really been a fun experience!

Lori,
Left a reply for you on your blog. Ack! Still can't believe you didn't go and meet him!

Firstly, I want to scream: Lori got to meet (or rather Lori's husband got to meet) Joss????!!!! OMG!!!

Ok, I've calmed down now.

Indian can be spicy, yes, but you can always ask them to tone it down. I believe some places lets you choose the spicy level (a lot of Thai places do the same thing).

I know a vegan who once said that she wasn't sure she could have been a vegan if it weren't for Indian spices. I'd have to agree (even though I'm not vegan).

Don't know if you have an Afghani restaurant in town (if not, make a trek to Vancouver and visit the Afghan Horsemen where my buddy Shah will treat you right!), but Afghani food (slightly north americanized for our palates) is amazing!

Chinese dim sum is a category of Chinese food onto itself, so that's something else interesting to try (not as many vegetarian dishes though).

How do I find you on Facebook?

Teresa,
I hadn't thought of Afghani food. I'll have to check and see if we have a place around here. We *love* Chinese food, but haven't found a good one up here yet. The best has been mediocre, the worst truly nauseating. I'm still hoping to find a good one, but I'm not holding my breath!
