where the arctic winds blast down through Canada, are funneled through the gorge and then spat out on the poor souls who live here. We knew this when we moved here. Really. To be honest, they're not much different than the Santa Ana's (for those of you familiar with that nasty southern California wind) except it's cold air instead of warm. The difference this time is that they're not stopping.
Saturday afternoon hubby and I were sitting in the living room listening to the winds howl outside, when we noticed some debris flying about the front yard. Besides a BBQ cover, there were some roofing shingles. Our roofing shingles. So off hubby trotted to Home Depot, cursing under his breath, to pick up some supplies to fix the roof. I told him to be happy - at least we weren't having to deal with downed trees, like most of our neighbors.
Still cursing, up he went on the roof, pounding away in the cold wind. And the winds kept blowing...
Sunday morning we awoke, went outside and found that the continuing "breeze" had blown off more shingles. So up hubby went, pounding away in the cold wind. And the winds kept blowing...
Monday morning dawned. I lay awake snuggled under the blankets listening to the sound of what could only be more shingles being stripped from the roof. So after hubby got home from work guess where he went? Yep, back onto the roof.
Cody and I returned around 4:00 this afternoon to find one of the neighbors cutting his front tree down. Apparently it was starting to pull out of the ground in the high winds and he wanted to cut it down before it fell. Pretty smart thinking considering another of our neighbors not only lost several sections of her fence this weekend:
but she also lost her front tree, which ripped up part of the sidewalk when it went. The city was nice enough to promptly serve her with a notice that it was her responsibility to fix the sidewalk.
So anyway, hubby decided to help our neighbor finish taking down his tree when they noticed that our front tree was pulling up out of the ground as well. Can you guess what the men weilding chainsaws did next? Yep.
Now you see it...
Now you don't...
So what about you, my loyal readers? Any weird, wacky, or just plain wild weather your way?

We see this type of weather all the time here in Florida. People think it's all sunshine, palm trees, and beaches, but it's more swamps, gators, and bugs. We have hurricanes that hit randomly between May and November and then we have the winter squalls to watch for in Jan and Feb. We have one of these squalls hitting us right now. They might wet or dry, but they always manage to stir up high winds and even a tornado or two, to hit quiet and unsuspecting neighborhoods or retirement communities.
Check out my niece's blog post from Hurricane Charlie, back in August 2004.

Keep this in mind when you pack your bikini and sunscreen for a trip to Disney!
Man, it makes me sad when trees have to be cut down. So sorry! But that first pic is incredible! I'm putting that scene on my "to see in person" list. That list is getting seriously long now. Hope the wind is dying down now!
Oh dear your poor hubby...I was 8 years old when the UK had the 'Great Storm' (aka a hurricane) in 1987, I had never heard wind whistle before and spent the night in my parents bedroom as I was terrified that a huge Pine tree was going to crash onto our house...it didn't, but there were many trees which weren't so lucky...Seven Oaks became 2 and our favourite woodland walk was completely floored and there was mass destruction over several counties with Sussex and Kent taking the brunt...It was quite something and remembered mainly for the local weather forecaster saying a few hours before that there was no hurricane heading our way..Ooops.
These days weird weather seems to becoming more commonplace...December storms with mass flooding and winds up to 90mph are not unheard of...the last one I was in my flat at Uni on the 13th floor and the building was swaying, which messes with your inner ear....August, which used to be our hottest month, now seems to be our monsoon season...two years ago saw the hottest temps over the summer in 30 years...and just recntly we had the coldest start to winter since records began....hmm, that phrase is a ponderance...do you think one day someone just said 'what odd weather we're having...is anyone writing this down?' and the first year must've been a record breaking one huh ;-)
We have a lot of high winds here on the Cape as well. A few years ago we had a really bad wind storm and had two trees fall on our house. One fell onto the window of our youngest girls bedroom and my three youngest children had been looking out the window at that point. Thankfully it caught on another tree as it was falling and that kept it from smashing through the window and probably fatally injuring one or more of my children. I was at the grocery store and got the call mothers dread where I could hear my kids screaming in terror and that was all. My oldest daughter didn't realize I had answered. Once she did, I directed all the children to the basement and headed home as quickly as possible. It was a rather frightening day,a s you can imagine.
I have finally had a moment to post my Joss story! And I am not your Facebook friend because I didn't want to post my last name on your blog. If you email me your last name or your email address, I'll email you and we can stalk each other on Facebook as well. lol. My email is in my contact info on my blogger profile.
Curse those Canadians and their winds (yeah, you can curse me)...LOL!
Seriously, though, I'm glad you guys weren't hurt or anything, but how scary! And like your poor dh needed another project.
yikes...on a roof in a wind storm. not fun. I can't say the weather has been much different this year, but if I look back my entire life I can see how much the weather patterns have changed up here...winter starts later and lasts longer and there seems to be more rain in the summers now and the temperature fluctuations are more severe...or maybe im just more sensitive now that im old :-P
