Family Fun Night

Periodically, our homeschool group has "Family Fun Nights" in place of our regular monthly parent meetings. This month we held it at a local 50's themed ice cream parlor, complete with build-your-own sundaes.

One of bubba's favorite parts of the night was the limbo. The kids were encouraged to be "original" with how they made it under the pole, and boy did they! There was plenty of rolling, crawling, crab walking, and the like.

This was the best shot I got of hubby. Fortunately, Jaci was distracting him enough that I actually caught part of his face before he could hide behind anything!

One of my favorite things about these events is that most of the dad's are able to come. I love seeing how the whole family interacts together, and honestly, I love seeing the dad's so involved. We're really lucky that hubby works odd hours because he's able to attend events that the other dads miss (like the Valentine's party).

Does your hs group have family get-togethers? How involved are the dads in the group? Or going back to the "olden days" as my son sooo affectionately calls the 80's ;P, how involved was *your* dad, especially as you got older??

Our homeschool group meets once a month for coffee at Borders. That's about it. And it's all moms.

And we don't really want to talk about my dads. :-P

I love seeing the husbands involved in the homeschool activities though. My husband comes with me to the convention each year. I don't know if he'd come to events 'cause we don't have them! =:-O

I love this idea! We haven't really managed to get the dads involved yet, partly b/c each family is so busy with their own stuff in the evenings. How do you manage to get group memebers to make this a priority?

My dad was moderately involved, but it often meant him pontificating and us having to listen to his lectures (he taught us Kung Fu and Chinese literature).

Our hs group has a lot of fieldtrips and fairs that the entire family can participate in. We use to be more active in those things but not anymore. Dh likes to do stuff with the kids, but not so much with the group...sometimes he's even more introverted than I am! ;)

Lori,

I had never even *thought* about meeting at a bookstore! What a great idea! Usually we meet at a restaurant, and the noise level can vary depending on who we're seated around.

No events? Really?? Want to come to some of ours? We'd love to have you ;D

Jennifer,
Lest you think that *all* of our groups families participate, let me assure you that it's not the case. There's actually a small core group of us that attend nearly everything, and everyone else attends at random. We *do* try to get as many as we can for these types of events, though. We posted a poll on our Yahoo loop to find the days that worked best for the families in our group. We typically plan events for those days (or evenings) that most of the families have free.

Teresa,
Oh, now I'm going to sing "Everybody was Kung-Fu fighting..." everytime I think of you ;D

And there's nothing wrong with being introverted. I would be out-and-about far less if my kid weren't such a social butterfly.

From now on, whenever your homeschool group has an event, I'm just going to pretend that we are there. I'm just tired of feeling jealous that we have no such gatherings around here. So YES, I thought the ice cream sundaes were scrumptious. And glad I moved out of the picture in time before you took the one of Mike. Bring on the next event cause I'm going to wear my AC/DC t-shirt just to embarrass everyone.
