Eat Around the World - Thailand

thailand Pictures, Images and Photos

Our most recent foray was to the country of Thailand and it was delicious!! I haven't had Thai food in more years than I can remember (partly due to hubby's insistence that he hated it). Well, guess what? He lied! I'm guessing that he had a really bad example of it once which made him think he didn't like it (kinda like when we started dating and he told me that he didn't like lasagna 'cause his ex-wife had made Hamburger Helper lasagna and he didn't like it ;P

So we arrived at the restaurant and the proprietor of the place was a delightful Thai man named Joe, who was not only thrilled to welcome our rather large lunch group, but also answered some questions we had about Thailand AND gave us free food! I know! He gave us free appetizers and dessert (sweet rice and mangoes). I was a little concerned that bubba wouldn't like the food, but when I looked down to that end of the table, I actually had to ask him if he'd licked his plate because there wasn't a single scrap of food left on it! It's now his most favorite place to eat.

In fact, after our initial visit, we took my dad there (and Joe gave us free appetizers, soup, and dessert) and again last night with some friends (and again - free appetizers, soup, and dessert).
So far, we've tried:
Pad Eggplant
Sweet and Sour Tofu
Pad Thai
Radna
Srivichai Fried Rice with Shrimp
Kao Pad with chicken and beef
Tom Kah soup with Tofu

And it's all been yummy! Joe told us our 10th meal was free, so we'll be going back again (and again, and again ;)

I'm so jealous! The only Thai I have been able to find around here tastes like Hamburger Helper Thai!

I'm so not at all adventurous when it comes to food...I know what I like and that's that....I even had to eat Mc D's for the two weeks I was in Hong Kong....I know...there's no hope.

I've never had Thai food. Part of it is that I've always been a cautious eater, and now, when I'm finally starting to get more adventurous, I'm married to a man who happens to love Hamburger Helper. ;)

Tell me more about this Eat Around the World. Is it something your homeschool group is doing?

I just wanted to let you know that my kids dance around the living room to your music, while I read your blog! LOL
I have never had Thai food, but I love Chinese and Japanese. I will have to find a restaurant and try it.

Obimom,
Pack the car, take a trip out here to Oregon, and I'll take you out for some *good* Thai! :D

Emma,
I am *so* not eating at McDonald's with you when I come over there! So you better start broadening your taste buds now, so that we'll know where to go ;)

Jennifer,
I am also married to a cautious eater, so I feel your pain ;) He used to be a strict meat-and-potatoes guy, but s-l-o-w-l-y he's tried (and loved!) many new things.

Eat-Around-the-World came about a few months back when a couple of my friends and I (we're all homeschoolers) wanted to expose our kids to culinary fare that they wouldn't normally try. Everyone takes turns picking a country, and then we find some restaurants that fit the criteria (open at lunch, within 30 minutes of everyone, reasonably priced, and as authentic as we can find). So far we've done French, German, Spanish (well, we tried, but there aren't any authentic ones here ;), and Thai. We always come with some fun facts and trivia for the kids, and everyone orders food that they've never had before. Even my hubby has tried (and liked) new things!

Kimberly,
So glad that my blog can be entertaining for your whole family :D Yes, you must try Thai food, and then let me know how you like it.

Ruth,
Quit...drooling...on...your keyboard ;D
